The decision

Our view: portability is useful only if the writing area still fits your work. Before choosing a compact notebook, compare it with the page size you normally use. A short list and a detailed drawing place different demands on the screen.

Bring a real example

Use a typical page from your own routine: meeting notes, a shopping list or a document to annotate. Check how much scrolling or zooming that task would require. Do not judge the device only by an empty notebook demonstration.

Check the ongoing cost

Ask which functions are included and which require Connect. In particular, the manufacturer lists handwriting search among its subscription features. Decide whether that feature is essential to your routine before comparing the total cost.

Our buying rule

Shortlist it if writing by hand is already part of your day and a smaller page helps you carry it. We have not tested handwriting recognition or writing feel. Try both where possible rather than relying on a specification sheet.
