Compatibility
Check the software before buying the hardware
A five-question pre-purchase check for connected gadgets.
Name the feature you want
Compatibility begins with the specific feature, not simply whether a cable plugs in. Write down the action you want to perform and the application involved. “Use this button to change scenes in my application” gives a seller a question they can actually answer.
Record the whole setup
Keep your computer or phone model, operating-system version, application version and intended connection together. You can share that list with support without sending a password. Ask about the feature on that setup, not whether the product works in general.
Check dependencies
Find out whether the desired function needs a separate app, plugin, adapter, account or paid plan. Ask what remains usable if that service is unavailable. Decide whether that dependency is acceptable for your routine before purchasing.
Ask about exports
If the gadget creates files or notes, check how you can export and open them elsewhere. Try an example file when one is available. A workflow should include retrieving your work later, not only creating it on the new device.
Our decision rule
Treat an unanswered compatibility question as unfinished research. Do not use a broad marketing badge as a substitute for the exact answer. A straightforward device that fits your existing tools may be more useful than a more elaborate one that requires you to change everything around it.
